Run as separate systems they cost roughly twice as much to keep, which is the usual reason a second certificate feels harder than it was.

Auditing how work is done, not how it is described

A safety audit examines whether the arrangements for protecting people at work are adequate and whether they are actually followed. It covers hazard identification and risk assessment, machine guarding and interlocks, electrical safety, work at height, confined space entry, lifting operations, hot work and permit systems, hazardous substances, personal protective equipment, contractor control, incident investigation and emergency response. Duties under the Factories Act, state rules and related legislation form part of the audit criteria.

Companies commission them for statutory reasons, for insurance, as part of an ISO 45001 programme, at the instruction of a corporate parent, or after an accident raised questions nobody could answer. Manufacturing plants, construction projects, warehouses, power and utility installations, chemical sites and logistics operations are the usual settings. Client contracts increasingly require an independent safety audit of the contractor before work begins. Multi employer sites need extra attention, since responsibility blurs at the interfaces.

Hazards, permits and the shortcuts nobody writes down

The audit runs on the floor, during production, on the shift where the work actually happens. Night shifts and shutdown activity are sampled deliberately, because that is when supervision thins and controls slip. We observe tasks, examine permits against the job underway, check guarding and isolation practice, test whether lockout is applied or merely posted on a board, and look at contractor crews with the same rigour we apply to your own employees.

Documents are checked against practice rather than accepted in place of it: risk assessments matching the current process, training and competence records for the person doing that task, equipment inspection and test certificates, and incident and near miss reporting including whether anything came of it. We interview operators and supervisors separately. Workers will describe the shortcut they use when the line is behind schedule, and that shortcut is usually the finding worth having.

Findings ranked by risk, and a safety picture management can act on

You get findings ranked by risk with photographs, the legal or standard requirement behind each one, and a corrective action naming the fix rather than asking for more awareness. Immediate dangers are raised the same day, in writing, not held back for the report. MSCi conducts the audit directly. Where the site is certified to ISO 45001, the findings feed the management system, and the certification body's audit remains a separate exercise with separate auditors.

Sites that act on the findings usually see near miss reporting rise before injury rates fall, which is the sequence you want, because it means people have started telling you about problems. Permit quality improves once somebody has checked permits against the real job. And management gets a picture built on observation rather than on the monthly report, which is often the first time the gap between the two becomes visible.
