Why expert advice is worth having
Organisations rarely fail ISO/IEC 42001 because the standard is hard. They fail because the evidence does not match what the auditor asks for.
The certification body is independent
We prepare you for ISO/IEC 42001, and an accredited body decides. Because we do not issue the certificate, our only interest is that you actually pass, which is what makes the preparation worth paying for.
The standard says what, never how
ISO/IEC 42001 is written to apply to every organisation on earth, which is exactly why it never tells you what to do in yours. Turning a clause into your process, on your sites, with your people, is the actual work.
Your team already has a day job
Running ISO/IEC 42001 in house means taking your most capable people off revenue work for months. For most organisations that hidden cost is larger than the fee for doing it properly.
Self assessment is generous
Everyone marks their own ISO/IEC 42001 homework kindly. An outside gap analysis tells you the uncomfortable part while it is still cheap to fix rather than three weeks before the audit.

What ISO/IEC 42001 is worth to you
Certification is a commercial decision before it is a technical one. This is where the return usually shows up.
First Mover Credibility
Being early to a recognised artificial intelligence management standard is a genuine differentiator while competitors still have nothing to show buyers.
Model Risks Documented
Recorded assessment of bias, accuracy and foreseeable misuse protects you when an automated decision is later challenged.
Enterprise AI Procurement
Large buyers are adding governance clauses to contracts and asking suppliers exactly how their automated systems are controlled.
Regulation Arriving Anyway
Building governance now costs less than retrofitting it once European and other artificial intelligence rules take full effect.

Look at how it is structured before you commit
We would rather show you than tell you. Book a demo and we will walk through a working ISO/IEC 42001 structure: how the manual is laid out, how procedures reference each other, how evidence is captured day to day, and how the whole thing is presented on audit day so nothing gets hunted for.
ISO/IEC 42001 in detail
A management system for organisations building or using AI
ISO/IEC 42001 is the management system standard for artificial intelligence. It follows the familiar structure of context, leadership, planning, support, operation, evaluation and improvement, with a control annex specific to AI: acceptable use policy, roles and accountability, data governance across training and inference, documentation of system design, impact assessment for the people affected, and control over third party models and suppliers. It is certifiable, which sets it apart from most AI guidance published so far.
The organisations asking are those building AI products, those embedding a vendor's models into their own services, and those deploying AI internally in hiring, credit, claims or clinical support. Enterprise buyers have begun adding AI governance questions to procurement. The EU AI Act places duties on providers and deployers of higher risk systems, and a certified management system is a practical way to show those duties are being managed rather than improvised in each team.
Impact assessment, controls and the lifecycle of a model
We map every AI system you build, buy or use, which almost always uncovers more than the register held. Each is classified by purpose, degree of autonomy, data used and potential effect on individuals. Then comes an impact assessment covering fairness, safety, privacy, transparency, human oversight and the consequences of the model simply being wrong, written for the specific deployment rather than for the technology in the abstract. Vendor models are assessed on what the contract and documentation actually let you verify.
Around that we build the system: an AI policy people can apply, defined accountability including who may approve a deployment, data governance covering provenance, quality, labelling and retention, testing and validation before release, monitoring for drift and degradation in production, incident handling for when a model misbehaves, human oversight designed into the workflow rather than bolted on, and documentation kept current as models are retrained. Internal audit and management review close the loop.
Certification, and a defensible answer on how your AI is governed
You end up with an AI inventory, classification criteria, completed impact assessments, the policy and control set, model documentation templates, testing and monitoring records, supplier assessment files and audit evidence. An accredited certification body performs the assessment and issues the ISO 42001 certificate. Where a client is also preparing for the EU AI Act, we map the management system controls against the legal obligations so a single set of evidence serves both purposes.
The practical change is that AI stops being deployed on individual enthusiasm. Teams know what needs approval and what evidence to produce, which speeds up the safe cases and stops the reckless ones early. Customers and regulators receive a documented answer rather than reassurance. And when a model does behave unexpectedly, there is a record of what it was trained on, what was tested, who accepted the risk and how the problem was handled.

ISO/IEC 42001 questions we are asked most
What does ISO/IEC 42001 actually require from us?
You will need a defined scope, documentation that reflects actual practice rather than intent, evidence the system has been operating for a reasonable period, trained staff, and at least one internal audit and management review on file.
How long does ISO/IEC 42001 take?
Most ISO/IEC 42001 projects run three months or so. The single biggest variable is not the standard, it is how fast your team can be freed up for training and internal audit alongside their normal work.
Do you issue the ISO/IEC 42001 certificate yourselves?
No, and no consultant should. The certificate comes from an independent accredited certification body after their own audit. We prepare you to pass it and we are there on the day to close findings. That separation is exactly what makes the certificate worth holding.
How is ISO/IEC 42001 consultancy priced?
It depends on your headcount, how many sites are in scope and how much of a system already exists, so we quote after a short conversation rather than publishing a figure that would be wrong for most readers. Scope, timeline and fees come to you in writing first.
Which industries need ISO/IEC 42001?
We map ISO/IEC 42001 to 6 sectors and it sits in our artificial intelligence practice. Organisations usually arrive because a specific buyer, regulator or tender committee has asked. Tell us who is asking and we will confirm whether this is the standard that satisfies them.
Can you work remotely, or do you need to be on site?
Remote delivery covers most of a ISO/IEC 42001 project comfortably. We recommend onsite presence for the initial assessment and for the certification audit, where being in the room genuinely changes the outcome.
