PCI DSS Consultants: Why There’s No PCI Certificate

PCI DSS consultants explain what PCI validation really means, with practical guidance. Learn what an Attestation of Compliance really proves and how PCI DSS consultants help you stay compliant. Good PCI DSS consultants spend a lot of time resetting this expectation before any technical work starts.

PCI DSS doesn’t work like ISO 9001 or ISO 27001. Whether you’re a medical device importer in Chennai, a distributor in Cebu or a startup in Lagos taking card payments, understanding that early saves money and awkward conversations with your acquirer.

Is PCI DSS a certification?

No. No accredited certification body issues a PCI certificate that stays valid for three years. PCI DSS gives you a point-in-time validation of compliance. Depending on your level and your acquirer’s rules, that’s either a Report on Compliance from a Qualified Security Assessor or a Self-Assessment Questionnaire you complete yourself.

If you’re used to ISO certification consultancy services, the gap is easy to miss. An ISO certificate comes from an accredited body and carries surveillance audits, so someone checks the system is still alive. PCI has no equivalent. Nobody turns up in month seven to see whether you kept going. A PCI DSS readiness checklist built around a single assessment date misses the point, and a “PCI certificate” requested in a tender proves less than the buyer assumes. What does an Attestation of Compliance actually prove?

Either route ends in an Attestation of Compliance, which you give to your acquirer. It says you were compliant on the day you were assessed. It doesn’t say you’re compliant now. That gap is where organisations get caught.

Picture a company that passes in March. Log reviews stop in June because the person running them leaves. An incident hits in October. The attestation on file is valid, and the controls behind it aren’t running.

A fair description of your position is “compliant as of [assessment date], attestation available on request.” That’s accurate, and it’s what a counterparty’s compliance team wants to read. Calling yourself “PCI certified” overstates what you hold.

Why does the difference matter in practice?

It changes three things: what you’ve committed to, who decides your requirements, and who’s allowed to do which work. Each one catches out teams that treat PCI like an ISO audit, so it’s worth taking them one at a time.

It changes what you’re committing to. An ISO certificate carries surveillance audits and an expectation of a maintained system. A PCI attestation carries a contractual obligation to stay compliant, validated once a year. Between validations, the obligation is total and nobody supervises it.

It changes who decides. Your acquirer sets your validation requirements. A certification body, a consultant or the standard alone can’t do it for you. The PCI Security Standards Council maintains the standard, while payment brands and acquirers determine validation requirements and consequences for non-compliance. Teams that plan without calling their acquirer sometimes do the wrong assessment entirely. Acquirers in India, the Philippines and Nigeria can each set their own expectations, so make that call before you spend a rupee, peso or naira.

It affects who can do what. Remediation and assessment raise independence questions. Ask any firm that offers both how it handles them, and be wary of an answer that treats it as a non-issue.

Is a Self-Assessment Questionnaire safe to complete yourself?

It’s allowed for many smaller merchants, but it’s still a real attestation with your signature on it. The danger lies in ticking boxes you haven’t verified, or picking the easier questionnaire because it looks simpler. An inaccurate attestation is worse than a late one.

Which questionnaire applies depends on how you accept payments. Choosing the lighter one is a decision you may have to defend after an incident. The forms also change: the Council updated SAQ A on 30 January 2025, so confirm you’re on the current version.

What changed in PCI DSS v4.0.1?

PCI DSS v4.0.1 is now the only active version. The Council published it on 11 June 2024 as a limited revision of v4.0. Version 3.2.1 retired on 31 March 2024, and all 51 future-dated requirements became mandatory on 31 March 2025, with no grace period.

Version 4.0 introduced 64 new or updated requirements. Thirteen took effect immediately and 51 were future-dated. The v4.0.1 revision didn’t move the 2025 date. Payment-page controls under requirements 6.4.3 and 11.6.1 drew the most industry attention. If your last assessment used v3.2.1, expect questions it never raised.

How do PCI DSS consultants play a main role?

PCI DSS consultants scope your card-data environment, find gaps against the current standard, and help you build controls that keep running after the assessment. They prepare you for the assessor without replacing one. Good ones also speak to your acquirer early, so you attempt the right validation first time.

The wider benefits of ISO consultancy services apply here too: fewer surprises, faster preparation and evidence that holds up under questioning. Management system consultants who already work with ISO 27001 can often map controls so one set of records serves two frameworks, because logging, access control and incident response overlap. For ISO certification consultants in India, that overlap saves real effort.

Our advice at MSCi is to shrink scope before anything else. The fewer systems that touch card data, the smaller the assessment and the cheaper the year-round upkeep.

What should you do instead of chasing a certificate?

Start by confirming your level and validation route with your acquirer. Then find out what you actually have to produce, and build for compliance you can hold year-round. The assessment only samples a state you’re meant to maintain every day, so planning around the assessment date alone doesn’t work.

A short PCI DSS readiness checklist to begin with:

1. Get your validation requirement from your acquirer in writing.

2. Map every point where card data enters, moves through and leaves your systems.

3. Pick the right questionnaire, or confirm you need a Report on Compliance.

4. Give every recurring control, such as log review, a named owner.

5. Put a quarterly self-check in the calendar so March’s evidence still holds in June.

The organisations that handle PCI well treat validation as a checkpoint. The ones that struggle treat it as the objective.

How can MSCi help you prepare?

MSCi prepares companies for audits and has more than 40 years of experience in ISO consultation. For PCI DSS, we help you scope the environment, close gaps, and set up habits that last, then hand you to your assessor ready.

Medical device manufacturers, importers and distributors often hold card data in e-commerce portals and dealer ordering systems without realising it. If you’re looking for PCI DSS consultants in India, or online support from teams in the Philippines and Nigeria, a scoping conversation is a sensible first step.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Is there such a thing as a PCI DSS certificate?

No. You receive an Attestation of Compliance after a Report on Compliance or a Self-Assessment Questionnaire. It shows compliance on the assessment date only, so ISO certification consultants will tell you to maintain controls year-round.

Do I need PCI DSS consultants in India?

If you accept, store or process card data, your acquirer will expect validation. PCI DSS consultants India-based or online can scope your environment and prepare you for the assessor. That’s usually cheaper than failing a first assessment.

What’s the difference between a Report on Compliance and a Self-Assessment Questionnaire?

A Qualified Security Assessor produces the Report on Compliance, while you complete the questionnaire yourself. Your acquirer decides which one applies to you. Confirm this before you start any PCI DSS readiness checklist.

Can the firm that fixes my gaps also assess me?

There are independence considerations, so ask any firm offering both how it manages them. A vague answer is a warning sign. Many organisations use one team for preparation and a separate assessor for validation.

How does MSCi help with PCI DSS readiness?

MSCi, with 40+ years in ISO consultation, helps with scoping, gap analysis and building repeatable controls. We prepare you for the assessment, and our management system consultants align the work with any ISO standards you already hold.

What are the benefits of using ISO certification consultants for PCI work?

They bring a tested method, shorten preparation and reduce the chance of choosing the wrong assessment route. Experienced ISO certification consultancy services also reuse evidence across frameworks. Teams in India, the Philippines and Nigeria benefit most when card security sits inside a wider management system.
