Why expert advice is worth having
Organisations rarely fail GHG because the standard is hard. They fail because the evidence does not match what the auditor asks for.
Template packs fail on contact
Downloaded GHG documentation describes a company that does not exist. Staff do not recognise the process, records never get made, and the gap shows up on audit day.
Findings get closed, not logged
Most GHG audits produce findings. What matters is whether they are closed with genuine corrective action or papered over, because the next auditor reads the last report first.
Auditors ask for particular evidence
Someone who has sat through hundreds of GHG audits knows which records get requested first and which answers collapse under a follow up question. That knowledge is only earned in the room.
It has to survive after we leave
A GHG system that only works while a consultant is on site fails its first surveillance audit. We build it so your own people can run it, and train them to do so.
Something about GHG this page has not answered?
What GHG is worth to you
Certification is a commercial decision before it is a technical one. This is where the return usually shows up.
Emissions Priced Correctly
Knowing where the tonnes actually sit tells you which plant, fleet or process to fix first instead of spreading budget thinly.
Border Tax Exposure Mapped
Exporters into Europe need product level carbon data, or they pay the carbon adjustment calculated on unfavourable default values.
Green Finance Eligibility
Banks offering sustainability linked interest rates want measured baselines and verified progress against targets, not statements of intent.
Tender Scorecard Points
Buyers award weightage for verified carbon data, which frequently decides a bid that was otherwise close on price alone.

GHG in detail
Counting emissions in a way that stands up to scrutiny
A greenhouse gas inventory is a structured account of the emissions your organisation causes, split into direct combustion and process emissions, purchased energy, and the wider value chain. The methods come from the GHG Protocol and the ISO 14064 series. Requests arrive from several directions at once: listed company disclosure rules, customers passing their own reporting burden down the supply chain, lenders assessing transition risk, and tender documents that now ask for a footprint figure alongside price.
Who asks varies by market. In India, large listed companies report under BRSR and increasingly push the question to their suppliers. Exporters to the European Union face carbon border reporting on goods such as cement, iron and steel, aluminium, fertiliser, electricity and hydrogen. Multinational buyers want Scope 3 data from anyone they purchase from. The common thread is that someone outside your organisation wants a number they can rely on, which means it has to trace back to meter readings, invoices and production records.
Building the inventory, source by source
Work starts with boundaries. We fix the organisational boundary, decide between operational control and equity share, then list every emission source at every site. After that comes data collection: electricity bills, diesel and furnace oil purchases, refrigerant top ups, process chemistry, company vehicles, and for Scope 3, procurement and logistics records. Most of the effort sits here, because the data usually lives in five different systems and nobody has ever pulled it together for a full financial year.
Then we calculate. Activity data is paired with emission factors chosen for the country and the fuel, converted to carbon dioxide equivalent using published global warming potentials, and documented so every figure can be reproduced. We write the methodology down, set out where the uncertainty sits, and build a workbook your own team can run next year without us. Where third party verification is wanted, we prepare the evidence pack and support you through the verifier's questions rather than answering them on your behalf.
The inventory report and what it lets you claim
You end up with a base year inventory, a methodology document, a data collection procedure with named owners, and a report structured for whoever asked for it. If verification is in scope, an independent verification body issues the assurance statement. We do not verify our own calculations, and no consultant should. The workbook matters more than the report, because it is what turns a one off exercise into an annual number your finance team is willing to sign.
What changes is the conversation. Once the sources are quantified you can usually see that a handful of them carry most of the total, which makes reduction planning an engineering discussion instead of a guessing game. Target setting becomes possible, because you finally have a baseline. Tender responses stop being awkward. And the second year costs a fraction of the first, since the boundary, the factors and the data routes are already fixed and only the numbers change.

GHG questions we are asked most
What does GHG involve in practice?
In practice that means documented processes matching how you really work, records showing the system running, people trained on their part of it, and an internal audit completed before anyone external arrives.
How long does GHG take?
Plan on somewhere between eight and sixteen weeks. Organisations with existing procedures move faster; those starting from nothing spend most of the time on documentation and getting records actually made rather than promised.
Do you issue the GHG certificate yourselves?
No, and no consultant should. The certificate comes from an independent accredited certification body after their own audit. We prepare you to pass it and we are there on the day to close findings. That separation is exactly what makes the certificate worth holding.
How is GHG consultancy priced?
There is no useful list price for GHG. Two organisations of the same size can differ by a factor of three depending on existing documentation. A short scoping call gets you an accurate written number.
Which industries need GHG?
We map GHG to 6 sectors and it sits in our environmental management practice. Organisations usually arrive because a specific buyer, regulator or tender committee has asked. Tell us who is asking and we will confirm whether this is the standard that satisfies them.
Can you work remotely, or do you need to be on site?
We work onsite, remote or a mix. Multi site groups often use remote sessions for documentation and reserve site visits for the gap analysis and the audit itself, which keeps travel cost out of the fee.
